for his prayers and support he's received in the recent weeks. the 85-year-old pontiff will step down on thursday at 8:00 p.m. a special mass today before heading to the airport. >> he'll be taking part in the selection of a new pope. lauren? >> reporter: the cardinal stopped to speak with us. he said pope benedict's successor will have to have a balance between wisdom and energy. enough energy to take on the abilities and wisdom to lead the church. it's secretive, but he shared what he could with us. >> reporter: loaded to rome for the mission of a lifetime. >> apart from the most significant thing you could do, i can't imagine that i would have to do anything as important as this. >> cardinal donald world, departing from dull less international headed to italy.

preside over holy week and the cardinal hopes to be back here in time for those ceremonies. >> lauren demarco, thank you. following a big story tonight and the fallout from yesterday's crash on the daytona international speedway. today the race went off without any major issues, but yesterday nascar was brought to a stand still after kyle larson's car hit a fence, sending debris flying into the crowd. more than 30 spectators were injured, two were in critical condition. crews worked to repair the fence. the president gave nascar fans the option of changing their seats today if they wanted to. >> our guest service team is prepared throughout the entire venue if fans are unhappy with their seating location or they have an incident, we'll relocate them. we'll treat that area like every other area of the grand stand. if a fan is not comfortable, we make every accommodation that we can. >> they plan to study the wreckage of larson's car and the debris from the crash.

the north, not all bad. as we head to tonight, it will become clearer, a few clouds lingering here and there. a few high clouds. the winds will give us a break. they're very gusty today from the northwest, creating significant wind chills, we're looking at 30-degree. as we move into monday, more sunshine ahead. i'm happy to say. and a break from those gusty winds. a lot of change is coming up in my 7-day forecast. i will have those details for you a little later on. back to you. >> a developing story out of tacoma park. police are verdicting a shooting that left two men dead as a possible murder-suicide. officers responded to reports of shots fired. the victim has been identified as david drea and steven hickman. no arrests have been -- just yet. we now know the victim in prince county. david caviar was shot and killed early this morning in

college park. investigators believe the murder appears to be gang- related, but so far there are no suspects in this case. bob mcdonald applauded the passing of the state transportation bill. he's attending the meetings, the three-day event bringing together all the governors from a-- across the united states to discussion issues. it will help bring jobs across state and bring families closer together. >> potholes are going to get fills and some of the major delayed infrastructures are going to get built, and what it means is parents get more time with their kids. they're going to get to the ballet resitals and baseball games faster. and we're going to have a better story to tell to have jobs come to virginia. >> tonight governors and their spouses will join the president and the first lady at the white house. and tomorrow the meetings will conclude. the president and vice president are attending those meetings. john kerry has embarked on his first overseas trip. it's a nine nation ten-day trip

during which cary is hoping to deliver ideas to the middle east about the ongoing violence in syria. mr. kerry's first stop london. he'll not be visiting the visiting the palestinian territory. they're telling them someone they know has been hurt in a car accident. the scammer then threatens to hold that person hostage until money is wired to cover the damage of the car. an investigation is under way, but no arrests have been made. >> d.c. public schools announced a local high school must forfeit its victory of the playoff game. and regular season games, the decision comes after an investigation found one of the players on the high school dunbar team is not on the district. the columbia regulations requires each school to -- a

chancellor, says it's deeply disappointing to have to revoke this title from dunbar, but it is even more disappointing that an ineligible player was playing on the team. coming up tonight, a national security risk. we are monitoring the latest on the china cyber threats after the recent hacks into government servers and several other businesses. more troubling news for the family of olympic track runner oscar pistorius. the double am amputee is facing murder charges and now so is his brother. we'll have the latest.

internet security experts are pointing the finger at china for thefts of information from the american military and companies. the white house has raised the cyber theft issues with chinese senior officials. peter dusey has more. >> reporter: china is targeting the united states with cyber attacks every single day, and it's getting worse. according to the chairman of the house integrity committee,

right now mike rogers says there's no consequence for it. >> they use their military and intelligence structure to steal intellectual property. repurpose it and compete in the international market against the united states. >> roberts want to indict back factors and prevent these cyber thieves from getting visas. we're told president obama has already put the chinese on notice. >> we have repeatedly raised our concerns at the highest levels about cyber theft with senior chinese officials, including in the military and we will continue to do so. >> democratic congressman elliott angle said the white house has acted appropriately so far but added they can always do more. >> i think we have to make it very clear to them that this cannot be business as usual. if they're going to continue to do this to the extent they're doing it, there's a price to pay. i was just in beijing with the chairman of foreign affairs committee, and we raised this

out of south africa where homicide charges have been filed against the brother of oscar pistorius. carl pistorius is accused in the 2010 death of a female motorcyclist. prosecutors say he was driving recklessly when the crash occurred. a spokesman for the family says the older brother is innocent. >> there's no doubt that he's innocent and the charge will be challenged in court. the investigation of the accident at the time proved he was not under the influence of alcohol, confirming it was a tragic accident after the motorcyclist collided with the car. >> the case could be over before his brother's murder trial is scheduled to begin in june. fox 5 investigating the dangerous game that's growing this popularity. teenagers passing out

the number of teens using and abusing prescription drugs has exploded. they era passing out pills at parties. here's thetail of drugs that's a deadly game game. they're the number one drug of choice for 12 and 13-year- olds. two-thirds of teen who is abuse them get them from family and friends. it starts with 1 pill from the family medicine cabinet, turning parents into drug dealers and most don't know it. >> i didn't sleep. i bari ate. i just used around the clock.

>> benso, xanax, vicodin, per coset. she used to steal meds from her grandmother. she swapped pills at pharm parties where the pharmaceuticals were as popular as alcohol. >> it's the same as byob. byop, bring your own prescription. she's on her third stint in drug rehab. >> you can get it easily in school. by the time i reached college, it's everywhere. >> studies show one in six kids has used prescription drugs to get high and more people die from prescription drug overdoses than heroin or cocaine. >> it is russian roulette. >> after fighting drug abuse, debbie sees an alarming trend. >> parents would never think their child would be doing that. they combine it with other drugs, which become as lethal cocktail. >> most people who get hooked start abusing prescription meds in their teens. when they end up in rehab, many

parents are just trying to keep their kids from dying. >> i will have moms constantly tell me, if i can get my child through high school alive, i will consider myself a good parent. it's a vicious cycle that starts, and it starts with just that one. >> ally, like most, never thought she would be an addict. no one wakes up and says, i want to become a drug a. i want to do all these things. i want to hurt people around me that i love, but it happens. >> unlike street drugs, there's a misperception prescription drugs are somehow safer. >> parents think it's pretty much okay if their kids abuse medicine because they're not out -- this is like a sense of relief. at least they're not out on the street corner getting it from a bad guy. it's medicine, how bad can it be. >> the partnership of drug free.org, which has launched the med sun abuse project. it's a campaign to prevent half a million teens from abusing

drugs. >> it's a huge amount of exchange. if i have the adhd drugs and you have the pain meds, we'll swap. i want them for one reason and you want them for another. that's what occurs at parties. >> about 2500 kids begin to abuse medicine every day. it's an epidemic that's filled an illegal prescription drug trade. u.s. attorney for maryland calls it his big drug enforcement challenge. >> the large quantity of pills on the street that are sold just like illegal drugs. >> law enforcement across the region are busting doctors and clinics suspected of dolling out pills. they can be sold out on the streets for a dollar or two. in the past few years, prosecutors in maryland convicted two drug dealers who sold a fatal dose of methadone that killed a teen. >> in some of these cases, these are not who you think of

as kingpin dealers. they're two or three pills at a time to high school students. >> i do know people who have ods, and it's really sad. it's tragic. >> ally wasn't the type of kid people would suspect of abusing. she graduated high school with a 4.0gpa, but her life eventually spiraled out of control. >> you think it's innocent. you think it's all fun and games. and you think it's just going to be this one time, but it can really destroy your life. >> she's been sober four months and is getting the life back that her addiction to prescription drugs nearly took away. virginia now tracks prescriptions of controlled substances to identify any illegal activity or potential abuses. maryland will begin doing the same late they are year, but d.c. has no such law. the office of national drug control policy says prescription drug abuse is the

nation's fastest growing drug problem. sherry lee, fox 5 news. >> what's not troubling is this weather. >> i was going to say, talk about something more pleasant. this weather is absolutely brilliant. we want another one like it. the clouds are out of the way. we have sunshine. we had gusty winds. it was great. hopefully you got outside and got to enjoy it. we have more coming our way. the winds are still a little bit up there. they were very, very gusty into the course of today. we're still going to see them be a little more breezy into the course of tonight before they start to lighten up. the good news is they will start to lighten up. that gave us all sunshine that we had today. wasn't it spectacular. that helped to push the clouds out. we have just a few high clouds now, kind of hanging around a little bit. we're going the see those clearing out in the course of tonight, and we're going to be set up for another nice gift from mother nature as we start the work week. i'm happy to tell you about

that. here's a lock at temperatures where things are just a little cooler today than the seasonal average. we hit 46 degrees, 43 at dust. right now it's 42 at national airport. 40 at dellas. and the cooler air is moving in a little bit from the north. that's because of the jet stream. take a look. we're seeing that the jet stream is actually a little bit over us. this is going to change. as we move through tomorrow, we're going get a flux of warmer air. the temperatures are going to be up and down once again in the 7-day forecast. you have to anticipate that. we have to keep our eye on a possible system that will have temperatures that will impact. here's a look at national conditions. the jet stream is taking the dip and the cooler air is settling in. parts of the northeast are

dealing with it. look at the west. the south numbers are gradually going to make their way toward us. eel move into the seven-day. lows today, into the 30s and 20s, a lot cooler as we move to the west and the suburbs. we'll see a little bit of cloud coverage here and there, and it will clear out in the course of tonight. radiational cooling means it's going to be clear skies with light winds. those winds will lighten up, and we'll feel cooler over the west particularly. 10:00 hour will be at 40 degrees, overall for tomorrow, we're starting off with plenty of sunshine. enjoy it while you can. as we know, things change as far as weather is concerned this. energy. >> how are you doing this. >> this sort of audition can be a little intimidating. >> this is going to swallow you up. >> until you let your hair down. or in this case get your water on. the folks who bring you d.c.'s drinking water have a thirst for a new mascot or at least humans to wear the costume of a giant water drop. >> we receive requests on a daily basis to come to events in and around the city. >> it's pretty cool. you see a happy water drop coming down the street. you can't do nothing but stop and just say, hey, what's going on. >> now, here's the deal with being a water drop. you're not supposed to touch anybody, and actually you're not allowed to speak. isn't that right? not the best interview. that's why part of the audition was capturing the attention of a passer-by and getting that person to take a sip of water. they are convincing.
